Today is a day for a cheesy celebration! Today is National Grilled Cheese Day! It’s time to celebrate one of America’s favorite comfort foods—grilled cheese sandwiches! At Coos Foodies, we surveyed our amazing group to uncover delicious insight into this beloved classic. Let’s dive into the gooey goodness of grilled cheese and soup combos that warm the soul.
Our survey revealed that when it comes to grilled cheese, many folks opt for the perfect pairing—soup! Whether it’s a classic tomato soup or a hearty bowl of broccoli cheddar, there’s something about the combination of melty cheese and a soup to get your taste buds watering. But, who can blame them? There’s nothing quite like dipping a crispy grilled cheese into a steaming bowl of soup on a chilly day.
Among the plethora of eateries serving up top-notch grilled cheese sandwiches, one name stood out among the rest—The Big Cheese at Front Street Food Trucks. With its mouthwatering selection of cheesy creations, this spot earned top marks from our survey participants. We were delighted to see they had tomato soup and opted for the sourdough bread. This created the perfect pairing, giving us a cheesy good start to our adventure of discovering what other foodie explorers were indulging in.
Other foodies nominations: Walts Pourhouse, Bungalow Market, and Homemade, each offering their take on the classic sandwich and its soup counterparts. Bungalow market offers a “bougie” grilled cheese, and multiple cheese options. Based on the Coos Foodie recommendation, we added the chipotle sauce, and it was just the perfect pairing with peperjack cheese. At Walts Pourhouse we opted to add bacon elevating this grilled cheese, and enjoyed a side of soup for dipping.
Dating back to 1920, the grilled cheese sandwich has been a staple in American households for generations. For those who have never lived in the fast lane, it’s made by sandwiching cheese between two slices of bread and toasting it until golden brown and ooey-gooey, its simplicity has truly stood the test of time. Whether you’re savoring a classic grilled cheese and tomato soup combo at home or venturing out to a local hotspot recommended by fellow Coos Foodies, take a moment to celebrate the simple joys of good food and good company.
As for me, I’ll take mine with extra cheese and a side of soup please,
