Hey Coos Foodies!
Today, we’re honoring one of the most beloved and iconic foods around – the hamburger! Whether you prefer yours with cheese, bacon, or a mountain of toppings, National Hamburger Day is the perfect excuse to indulge in this classic comfort food. But before we take a big bite, let’s explore the juicy history behind the humble hamburger.
A Beef (haha) History of the Hamburger:
The hamburger’s origins are as rich and flavorful as the burger itself. The concept of a meat patty dates back to ancient times, but it was the influx of German immigrants to the United States in the 19th century that paved the way for the modern hamburger. The name “hamburger” comes from Hamburg, Germany, where beef from Hamburg cows was minced and formed into patties.
The Evolution of the Hamburger:
Late 1800s: The first recorded hamburger was sold by Louis Lassen, a Danish immigrant, at his small lunch wagon in New Haven, Connecticut. Louis’ Lunch, established in 1895, claims to be the birthplace of the hamburger as we know it today.
1904: The hamburger gained national attention at the St. Louis World’s Fair, where it was showcased as a new and exciting food.
1920s: The fast-food revolution began with White Castle, the first chain to sell hamburgers in large quantities, making them affordable and widely accessible.
Post-WWII: The hamburger became a symbol of American culture, popularized by drive-in restaurants and, later, fast-food giants like McDonald’s and Burger King.
Modern Day Hamburgers:
Today, hamburgers come in countless variations, catering to all tastes and dietary preferences. From classic beef burgers to gourmet creations with truffle aioli and arugula, and even plant-based options for vegetarians and vegans, the hamburger continues to evolve.
